Podium Photos - coming soon!

What an AMAZING Weekend of Iowa grassroots cyclocross at Mullets in Des Moines!

We didn't get the expected rain and stayed dry all weekend except for a light sprinkle during relaycross on Sat.

We raised $1,240 during relaycross for the Des Moines Street Collective.

Looking back at all the photos makes us realize how cool of a cycling community we have!  The volunteers, the racers, the spectators, the Mullets staff, the sponsors, the promoters. It takes a small army to make an event like this happen.

We'll link up more photos and videos as they become available.

THANKS and TRIPLE HIGH FIVES to these organizations, businesses and people who made this event happen!

Proceeds from relaycross presented to the Street Collective

Distance - timed event

Capital City Cross is one of the races that helped launch the Central Iowa cyclocross scene!

Come out and enjoy a spectator-friendly venue with a great view of the downtown Des Moines skyline.

New for 2023!
  • Venue will be Mullets this year for both days.
  • Race format - We are keeping it simple this year -  A, B, C races for men and women with a charity relaycross event Saturday afternoon
  • Grassroots - cheaper racing and better spectating
  • ALL proceeds from Relaycross will go directly to the Des Moines Street Collective.
  • Race Course - It will be tight, twisty and fun - plan for a .75 mile course length
  • Saturday and Sunday A/B/C races are NOT USAC sanctioned, but results will be upload to which is what most CX races use for call-ups these days

  • Short track fast-paced race course
  • No USAC license needed
  • Pre-Registration link below. Day-of is $10 more for each race (waived for Juniors and C Race)
  • Everyone must sign a waiver (BikeReg is online)
  • Sorry, there is not a junior-specific race this year
  • Wear your helmet
  • Food, Drink, Restrooms available at Mullets
  • Questions? contact Scott -

Haven't raced before? This is a perfect place to see if you like cross. Show up early to get a little practice. Better yet, show up at the Tuesday night practices and try it out! You don't even need a special bike. Mountain bikes and fat bikes work great. All you need is: two wheels, a brake on each wheel, a freewheel, and handlebar ends that do not point forward or up.

We've added a FREE race for Juniors on both Saturday and Sunday. All juniors will start together and race for 20 minutes.  Juniors ages must be ages 6-18.  If your junior is an experienced racer, they are more than welcome to sign up in the A, B, or  C races to race in a bigger field with more competition. THANKS to Christopher's Fine Jewelry for Saturday's & Sunday's Juniors Races !

If you have never been to a cyclocross race, you are missing out! This is FREE entertainment at its best! There is action everywhere and you can watch the race from several vantage points! Kick back for an afternoon and watch cyclocross! Bring lawn chairs and park yourself, or walk about and check out the whole course.

If you weren't there in the past, you are probably wondering what Relaycross is?

The format is simple:  2 hours of cross racing with 4 teammates tagging in and out to ride as many laps as possible before time runs out.  The team with the most laps wins.  FUN!

Categories: you can sign up with any gender - all men, all women or co-ed. The top 3 teams with the most laps will get on the podium!

Race Course:  You'll race the same course as the A/B/C races with some slight changes for the team transfer area and a possible "shortcut" feature.

Bike: Run whatcha Brung! pretty much any bike will work. You must have brakes. No bar-ends. NO E-BIKES ALLOWED unless you remove the battery.

Pace: This race is designed to be as serious or leisurely as you want.  You and your team can race all out or at a conversational pace.  It's all for a good cause.

Payouts?  Uh... nope - Just praise, High Fives, pride and good karma to everyone that enters.  The Top 3 teams will be crowned champions!

Pre registration?  Yes - you can register on BikeReg this year. Each person can register on their own. Please make sure you enter the Team Name the same way for all four teammates. You can register day-of too, but it will be $10 more for each person.

Do I need a license you ask? Nope!  This is an unsanctioned charity race!

Mullets is a a fun riverside bar and grill serving up a delicious full menu within a high energy environment complete with large outdoor space, 2 level patio, and amazing views of downtown. Celebrating all things about the hairstyle that’s business in the front and party in the back.

Their normal closing time is 3pm, but they will stay open until 5pm on Saturday and maybe later if the party is still goin' on!  Sunday plan for a 3pm closure.

Amenities are abundant at Mullets. Order food and drink from the inside bar/restaurant area. Some refreshments will be sold from outside so you don't miss a beat.  Restrooms are inside too!

PLEASE be respectful. Pick up your trash and don't bring any alcoholic beverages on the property unless you buy from Mullets.

Park across the street from Mullets or on the side streets to the South and West of Mullets. Or better yet, Ride your bike there!!

You are so close to downtown Des Moines where there are plenty of great restaurants and hotels to spend the weekend.

Follow this Google Link for driving, cycling and walking directions.

Ride Your Bike - Mullets is right on the Meredith Trail, and the SW 1st street pedestrian trail bride is very close as is the Des Moines River Trail.

We couldn't host this RACE without sponsors!!

- Event Insurance is expensive
- Race Prizing
Interested in becoming a sponsor?  email if interested!

This will be one of the shorter cylocross race courses in Iowa.

Plan for a .75 mile race course with plenty of punchy turns, twists, run-ups, barriers and much more!
Everything you'd expect in a cyclocross race - just a shorter lap!

The course will be marked and open for pre-riding by 8:30 AM.
